What we’re building
nüNERD is building the children's library we wanted and couldn't find: history, philosophy, and classic literature, retold as kids' books at every reading level, so a child can start a big subject as a toddler and grow up ready to read the original. Most kids don't meet these books until a school assignment at seventeen, if ever. We think that's a mistake, and we're fixing it one subject at a time.
The library
We publish one subject at a time, and each one comes as a set of books at different reading levels, so the same story grows with your child from the crib toward the real thing: ages 0 to 4, 3 to 7, 6 to 10, and 10 to 14 for the deepest series. The subjects are history, philosophy, and classic literature, the things most worth knowing and the hardest to find done well for a child.
13 topics are live so far, 46 books in all, from Alexander and Caesar to Stoicism to Don Quixote, and we add more every month. We’re working through the whole canon, so the subject you love is there for your kid when you go looking. You can browse what’s shipped on the books page, and see what’s coming on the roadmap.
Who makes them
nüNERD is two people, and that's the whole staff.
Noah Watkins started it. He's a history enthusiast, a London-based small-business owner, and a dad. The idea began when his wife was pregnant and he went looking for the books he wanted on his daughter's shelf, big subjects, not dumbed down, that would carry her from a board book up to the source itself. He couldn't find them, so he started making them.
Karen Gregory is his mother, and none of this exists without her. She spent more than thirty years in education, most of it teaching, then as a principal and district administrator. She edits every manuscript, shapes the teaching points, and reads every book we publish cover to cover before it ships.
